Week 2 Recap: High-Scoring Thrillers and Pitching Masterclasses

The second week of the Lower Mainland Fastpitch League season saw a dramatic shift in momentum across the region, as high-scoring outbursts and historic pitching performances dominated the headlines. From the power displays in Richmond to the defensive stalemates in Vancouver, the diamonds were electric from Tuesday through Thursday.

Tuesday: Power and Precision

The week kicked off with the Ladner Masters making a definitive statement against the Langley Hounds. In an 8-2 victory, the Masters showcased a relentless offense led by Cam Gray, who turned in the performance of the week by going 3-for-3 with a towering home run and two stolen bases. While Gray provided the fireworks, Rob Johnston was the anchor on the rubber, tossing five solid innings with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Across town, the Steveston Canadians reminded the league why they remain a powerhouse, outlasting the Connaught Meralomas 9-5. After the Meralomas fought back to tie the game at four, Steveston exploded for five runs in the fifth. Yoshi Hikida was the catalyst, driving in three runs on three hits, while pitcher Jason Turner locked down the win with six strikeouts over five innings.

Wednesday: The Athletics’ Hit Parade

Wednesday night belonged to the Richmond Athletics, who turned their matchup against the Connaught Rangers into a home run derby of sorts, racking up 16 runs on 19 hits. Justin Parra was the man of the hour, reaching base in every appearance and scoring three times. However, the true story was the endurance of Darren Strang, who put in a massive seven-inning shift, striking out 12 Rangers to ensure the Athletics’ victory was never in doubt.

Thursday: A Night of Dominant Aces

Thursday was defined by the “Year of the Pitcher,” featuring two of the most dominant outings in recent LMFL memory. In a tense, low-scoring affair, the Vancouver Lomas edged out the Connaught Meralomas 2-1. Tyler Lingren was nearly untouchable, pitching a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts. The slim offensive support came primarily from Nick Fry, whose two-hit night provided the spark the Lomas needed to survive.

Meanwhile, the Langley Hounds found their redemption against the Connaught Jazz in a 7-1 win. The story here was Josh Anderson, who turned in a performance for the ages. Anderson struck out 15 batters in just six innings, allowing a mere two hits. He was backed by the speed of Canyon Gudaitis, who pressured the Jazz defense all night, scoring three runs and stealing a base despite not being credited with an official at-bat.

Finally, the Richmond Rays capped off the week by dismantling the Surrey Rebels 8-1. Evan Willis authored a masterpiece on the mound, fanning 16 batters over seven innings while allowing just two hits. The Rays’ offense was paced by Neil Barlow, who drove in two runs and scored twice to ensure Willis had more than enough cushion to work with.

With Week 2 in the books, the standings are beginning to take shape, and one thing is certain: whether it’s through a 16-run explosion or a 16-strikeout shutout, every team in the LMFL is capable of stealing the spotlight.
