In August, the Lower Mainland Fastpitch League (LMFL) held their annual playoffs at Softball City, with outstanding competition, community energy, and strong support for the sport of fastpitch once again on display. In addition to the on-field action, the league ran a fundraising raffle with one straightforward purpose: to reinvest in the future of the game.
Thanks to the generosity of the players, teams, families, and fans, the raffle raised enough to allow the LMFL to make a $1,000 donation to Lower Mainland Boys Fastpitch League (LMBFL) in support of boys’ fastpitch programs. These funds will support participating associations with promotion, equipment, uniforms and training, and contribute to building a stronger base of athletes feeding into the sport.
Randall Thompson, head of the LMFL, underlined the role of collaboration at the grassroots level: “The Lower Mainland Boys Fastpitch League has done a great job getting boys back on the diamond to play the game of fastpitch. With the donation, supported unanimously by our team representatives in our last meeting, we want to show our support in growing the sport from the grassroots.”
Building the Future: What LMBFL is Building
LMBFL works closely with Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley minor fastpitch associations and is committed to establishing boys-only team competition along with a development pathway for young male athletes.
What Families Can Expect in the Program
Boys signing up in U9/U11/U13 divisions through member associations will be part of boys-only teams with the season commencing in April. The early-season schedule is geared towards :
- Fun, skills-based practices centered around the successful Learn to Play model
- Gamification and team-building to keep the players engaged and hyped
- Regional jamborees, where teams will enjoy games, a BBQ and community activities with other boys’ teams
- When possible, the LMFL will schedule men’s games in parallel to showcase and promote the sport, showing its lifelong appeal
Why Fastpitch Is the Perfect Sport for Young Boys
Fastpitch has some unusual advantages over most sports:
- Continuous action & fundamental skills – there’s no standing around; players stay active and involved
- Fast-paced game – keeps athletes energized and learning through exciting, dynamic moments
- Predictable schedules: it’s easy for families to plan ahead with consistent practice and game times.
- A lifelong community: many LMFL men’s players have been associated with the sport for more than 30 years. That’s how strong and lasting a fastpitch community can be.
Building the Sport Together
The donation from the LMFL reflects a shared vision to ensure boys across the Lower Mainland have fun, well-structured, and meaningful opportunities in fastpitch. In supporting the LMBFL, the LMFL is strengthening the entire fastpitch ecosystem, from new U7 players just learning to swing a bat, to seasoned veterans competing well into adulthood.
On behalf of the LMFL, we’d like to thank all the players, volunteers, teams, and fans who supported our fundraiser last season and continue to support growth initiatives for fastpitch across our region.
